Did you know it is illegal to import haggis into the US? (For health and safety reasons.) It would also be mostly impossible to make an authentic one in the US because no reputable butcher will sell you sheep lungs. (The lungs are the reason for the ban.) Haggis was never going to happen anyway but was I curious about it.
I was initially going to make Cock-a-Leekie soup but they had no leeks at the grocery store. Sometimes they have them, sometimes they don’t, and I never know exactly when they will carry them. So, I swerved to mince and tatties, mostly because it looked fairly simple to make, and it is fun to say. It is also a meal I can easily imagine a busy mom or dad throwing together for a weeknight meal.
The mince (ground beef) was cooked up with sauteed onions and carrots, beef stock, and gravy granules. It was really easy to make. The tatties (mashed potatoes) were made the way one makes mashed potatoes. I threw some roasted garlic seasoning and chives in with mine. Just because.
I ordered Bisto gravy granules online because several recipes recommended it. I can see them being good to have on hand to make gravy when you’re tired and/or pressed for time.
All in all, this was one of the easiest recipes I’ve made and it was tasty and filling. It reminded me of Shepherd’s Pie (AKA Cottage Pie elsewhere).
Would I make it again? I'm not sure but, the next time I make Shepherd’s Pie, I’m going to incorporate some red wine and Bisto into the meat mixture because I really like what they added to the mince here.
